CHAPTER 3*

Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented.

As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “THIS IS MY SON, WHOM I LOVE; WITH HIM I AM WELL PLEASED.”

Another compilation of great paintings. Love the simplicity of #59 by the Polish artist Józef Buchbinder. A very intimate and sacred moment between John and Jesus and which marks the beginning of Jesus’ ministry.

Good Morning Dan, and good morning to all.

Greatly enjoy these. Have been surprised that some artists collaborate (?) with another artist, on the same painting. Why is this?
#50 Brueghel / Rottenhammer

This one seems to depict very closely the Word:
#63 Picot

Thank You Dan =:^)

A very intimate and sacred moment between John and Jesus

Made even more special, no doubt, by their lifelong kinship. John was created for this moment.

Why is this?

Right-handed artists paint the right half and then find a lefty....
It's a half-hearted attempt....
Want someone to share the blame....

Brueghel the Elder and Rottenhammer became acquainted in Rome and created works together. Their cooperation continued even after they returned to their respective towns. For this particular painting, Brueghel sent Rottenhammer his landscapes into which the latter inserted his figures.
Collaboration between artists can be viewed as a test of putting the ego aside so to work toward a common idea, and based on mutual respect. There are many examples in art of this collaboration and continues today.

Thanks for that helpful explanation, Alba.

For this particular painting, Brueghel sent Rottenhammer his landscapes into which the latter inserted his figures.

For the record, regularly I omit huge landscapes which feature the biblical scene in a tiny corner of the canvas (not the case in this one). By now, that must amount to several dozen of them. I just don't see the point of them.

Landscapes evoke the beauty of nature, God’s creation, suggesting His presence in subtle ways. Many, many artists used landscapes as a backdrop for their biblical stories; before the 16th c. landscape though was never a subject matter. It was during the 17th c. that landscape became important, influenced also by political and religious changes, especially during the Dutch Golden Age. As an example, after the Netherlands gained independence from Spain, Dutch artists began to feature scenes of their own countryside in a show of national identity and pride.
It’s all part of the evolution of painting and changing taste, but one can still focus on the religious moment while admiring nature and the mastery of the artist.

It is interesting to me that in most of the art, Jesus is sprinkled instead of immersed.

Was the Jordan River so very dry?

I assume it’s a denominational distinctive, reflective of Roman Catholicism, which predominated where most of these artists lived.
